A rant about Kant

Results from Survey Monkey

The survey done was preliminary. Its purpose was to gauge any relationship that may exist between the use of the discussion board, synchronous activity and student retention.

5 of the responses showed that students posted more than what was required to the discussion board.

5 of the responses indicated a retention rate greater than that of 90%

2 of the respondents have taught only through asynchronous course delivery

All of the respondents require the use of the discussion board.

Of the 2 that taught solely through asynchronous

If the sample used were a representative sample it would show that synchronous vs. asynchronous activity to not be correlated to a higher retention, but that active participation in the discussion board did, as a higher percentage of retention was shown on those courses in which the students contributed more that the required number of posts. It could be extrapolated from this that peer to peer communication is more important to developing the sense of community within the online environment. This would be based on the assumption that there is a positive correlation between student retention and sense of community.
